Commissioner Bill Hutson
|
| First off, I have to admit that I am glad to be
here and able to add my ten cents with these comments. No one
has waited more eagerly for the snow to melt and
see the start of the golf season than me, so welcome back and
enjoy the sport I love so well. |

Common Golf Course Etiquette
|
| Being the "Crotchety Commissioner" you all know so well, I have some
comments on the Etiquette of Golf we all need to think about as
we play this year. |
| As I drove around the course last year watching our teams playing, I
noticed on the Par three holes, no one let the team on the Tee behind
them hit up. |
| When all the match players are on the green, look back to the Tee Box.
If there are players on the tee, wave them up and let them hit their
tee shots and then finish out the hole as they drive up to
play their balls. This is a common courtesy that is used on all
courses around the world. It speeds up play and avoids rangers yelling
about “Slow-Play”, 12 minutes per hole. |
| Pay attention to what is going on with your group. When you can hit your
ball, make your preparation,
select a club or two and "Hit the damn ball", don’t run back
and forth to the cart to change clubs. |
| When there are two players in a cart, drop off the
player who is “away”, let him make his club selections, then
drive over to your ball, make your club selection and be ready
to play. After the “away” player has hit, he can walk toward the
cart and meet you. There is no need to drive back and forth across
the fairway to hit your balls. This also speeds up play. If you
are a walking player, go to your ball and be ready to hit. There
is no need to walk to your partner’s ball and to watch him hit then walk
over to your ball when it is on the other side of the fairway. |
|
|
| There are exceptions, such as when you are helping a player to look for
a lost ball, but when you are done looking or he elects to drop, go
to your ball and be ready to hit! There is no need to stand around in a
group waiting on a player to hit his ball. I watch a lot of guys
spend a lot of time looking for balls last year.Don’t spend too long looking for balls. Someone in your group knows
where your ball landed. If the “green” is open and there are
players behind you waiting to hit their next shot, either drop a ball
and finish the hole or waive them through if you want to keep looking.
If you can't find it drop a ball, take your penalty stroke and keep
play moving. |
| I would like to see all our Excel teams follow these simple guidelines
for playing the game we all love so well, and believe me; these pertain
to all of us. I really don’t give a dam about other leagues or players,
but I would love to see the Excel League set an example for all
others to notice and follow. |
